Overscan terms and privacy
Last updated 12 October 2026
The short version
- Overscan is free, made by StarSync with care, and we want it to work well on your PC.
- It's provided as is. We test it on lots of setups, but every PC is different, so we can't promise it will work perfectly on yours.
- Overscan only changes its own settings and, while it runs, hides the taskbars on your side screens (they come back when it stops). It doesn't change Windows' display settings, your files, or anything else.
- If something goes wrong, Settings > Help has Safe Restart, Reset and Report a Problem. Tell us and we'll do our best to fix it.
- Overscan doesn't collect anything about you. A problem report only leaves your PC if you save, copy or send it, and you choose what goes in it.
- Overscan checks for updates once a day by default. You can set it to Weekly or Never, and nothing about you or your PC is sent.
1. Using Overscan
You may install and use Overscan for free, for personal or business use, on as many PCs as you like.
Overscan is closed source. Please don't copy, sell, modify, reverse-engineer or redistribute it, or publish it somewhere else as your own. Share the link to starsync.dev instead.
2. No warranty
We put real care into Overscan, but it is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and non-infringement, to the extent the law allows.
We don't promise that it will be error-free, work with every PC, monitor, graphics card, game or video, or run without interruption. Protected video (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and similar) shows black to every screen-capture tool, so Overscan can't light up from it.
3. Limits of responsibility
To the extent the law allows, StarSync is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss or damage (including lost data, lost time or problems with other software) that comes from using or not being able to use Overscan. Where liability can't be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for Overscan, which is nothing.
Nothing here limits rights you have by law that can't be waived (for example, liability for gross negligence, or consumer rights in your country).
4. Your settings and your PC
Overscan keeps its settings in %APPDATA%\StarSync\Overscan\. It reads (but never changes) your monitors' sizes, resolution and scale from Windows. While it runs it can hide the side-screen taskbars; a separate safety process puts them back even if Overscan crashes, and Settings > Help > Safe Restart or signing out also brings them back.
Uninstalling removes Overscan and puts the taskbars back. Your settings folder can be deleted by hand.
5. Privacy
- No tracking, no analytics, no account.
- Update checks send nothing about you, and you can turn them off. Details under Updates below.
- Problem reports are built on your PC. You see exactly what's in them (Preview), can untick any PC detail, and nothing is sent unless you choose to send, save or copy it. A report can include: Windows version, processor, memory, graphics card, your screens (model, size, resolution, scale), Overscan's settings and its recent log. It never includes your files, browsing, or what's on your screen.
- Your email is optional. If you give it, we use it only to reply about that report. We don't share it, sell it, or add it to any mailing list. Ask us any time and we'll delete it.
- We keep reports only as long as we need them to fix the problem.
Updates
Overscan checks for a newer version once a day by default. You can change this to Weekly or Never in Settings > About > Updates, and Never means it makes no requests at all. The check is a plain download of a small file from get.starsync.dev, and nothing about you or your PC is sent (no ID, no settings, no usage data). Like any web request, the server sees your IP address and the app version; we do not log or keep them for anything else. Installers are downloaded from media.starsync.dev (Cloudflare), and an update is only installed if you click Update now or chose "Install when it closes". Portable copies only show a message and a link. Updates are signed by StarSync, and the app refuses anything that isn't.
6. Changes
If these terms change, the new version ships with the update and is on starsync.dev. Using a newer version means you accept its terms.
7. Contact
Questions about these terms or your data: email [email protected], or use the contact form.
Something not working? In Overscan, open Settings > Help > Report a problem. It can attach the details we need (you see and choose everything first, see Privacy).
